Lunch Box #14

This is my last lunch box I prepared for my son. He doesn't want to bring lunch box to school anymore. :( I suspect that he prefers to bring money to school so he can buy and eat whatever he likes. Noone to stop him. :/ Hmm ... I don't think I'll stop making lunch box for him. I'm just going to let him have some freedom and fun buy food from the school canteen, then start making lunch box again. This lunch was made according to my son's request. Noodles, lightly stir fried with sesame seed oil and oyster sauce. I added Kai Lan, carrots and fish cakes to it too. I actually wanted to do something with the carrots but run out of time, so I just had to leave it as it is with the hole in the middle. :P

  1. I guess you must feeling sad that your son refuse your "Ai Xin" meal. Although less work now but you will miss them? Meanwhile I send you an email, you got it?

  2. Make it more adult looking. It was sweet of you to make little flower carrots but, as with many children, they want to feel more adult. Cut out the swirl things and flower carrots and see how he feels. I on the other hand would love for you to make me lunch :-P!! Wish I lived next door.

  3. Haha, boys is boys. My boy was like that too on his first day of school. So I used the reversed physcology telling him canteen food is very unhealthy, we must save, then i promised to let him have a 'canteen day' every friday. Sometimes I purposely forget that it was canteen day and go ahead with a pack lunch and he will remind me again, "I thought today no bento?" lol.

  6. I am wondering about the coloring of the fish cakes and how they are made to look as they do in picture. I am impressed and think this might tempt a school child especially if they help decide what to put in. Thanks!

  7. Peggy,
I bought the the fish cake but it's combining actually laying a piece of white fish paste and a coloured fish paste on top of each other before you roll them. It will give them the spiral effect. :)

  8. What type of noodles do you use? Wish to try it for my son's lunch box. TQ.

  9. Just out of curiosity, do you serve the noodles cold? I am planning to do some bento for my Pri 1 niece but she does not stay with me.

So I am wondering if I can ask her mom to put the food in the fridge and take it out in the morning to pack...should she heat it up or can it be cold? Need to be in thermos or with ice pack?

Sorry for my long questions and thanks in advance for your advice.

  10. Emy,

Most of the bento I made for my son were done on the same day, cooled then packed. If you pack hot or warm food, the food might turn wet from the vapour and I also worry about food turning bad because of this. Unless you pack hot/warm food in a thermos, then that's a different thing.

I suppose you can prepare a day earlier and heat it the next day but in this case, I would use a thermos lunch box to keep in warm instead cos I not sure if it's a good idea to reheating and 're-cooling' the food.

    Hope this helps. :)
